Thuso Phala has claimed he made R14 million at SuperSport United.

Former Bafana Bafana star Thuso Phala has revealed how he was pocketing a staggering R14 million at SuperSport United.

The story

Unlike in Europe's top leagues, local footballers' earnings and transfer fees are often undisclosed. As a result, there's been a growing trend of players opening up about how much they made during their careers once they have retired or suffered a dramatic fall from grace.

Phala formerly announced his retirement from professional soccer earlier this month after a formidable 17-year career, representing clubs like Platinum Stars, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and SuperSport.

Majoro reveals how he realised he wasn't earning enough

It has since been revelead that he was earning handsomely at Matsatsantsa, where he spent six seasons between 2013 and 2019.

"My contract at SuperSport was worth R14 million for three years, incuding salaries and everything. Every year, there's a management fee and my agent got R1.2 million per year for taking me to SuperSport...and that was just for bringing me there, not for training me on the side or anything like that.

"I sign the contract and at the back of it is the management fee. Tim Sukazi [TS Galaxy owner] he is so transparent that he showed me what he was getting from this deal.

"Some agents don't show the players what they are getting from the deal."

Unfortunately for Phala, things soured between him and the club's management and his contract was terminated before it was set to expire. Speaking in an interview with Cape Talk, it was revealed that he was the highest-earning player in the club’s history at the time.

"I just acted out of my character, afterwards I really saw I reacted and I regretted it… I am grateful for the opportunity I got at SuperSport United… I think it could have ended better with my behaviour. For me there is no bad blood with the club."
