Doctor Khumalo has hailed rising star Elias Mokwana following impressive performance during Bafana Bafana’s six-goal thriller against Algeria on Tuesday evening.

South Africa walked away with a 3-3 draw against The Desert Warriors at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algeria on Tuesday night as Themba Zwane struck twice before Elias Mokwana’s deflected shot went off Iqraam Rayners for a third.

Meanwhile, Bafana’s goals were canceled out by a Yassine Benzia brace and Yacine Brahim on the opposite side of the pitch to end the match all square.

Despite the draw, Bafana legend Khumalo was left impressed with one of the newer faces in Hugo Broos' camp. Mokwana had come on as a second half substitute and made an immediate impact, his second goal contribution in as many games.

"I think [Hugo] Broos has to pride himself because he found a diamond in Mokwana," Khumalo said on SABC Sport.

"I mean, two games in a row the boy is showing character, he is positive, he is going forward. There is no type of wing player I enjoy watching than when a winger that gets the ball and fetches (takes on) a defender because that’s the reason why we have wing players, in order for them to isolate and this is exactly what we saw Mokwana doing.

"I would have loved to see Mbanjwa, but unfortunately he (Broos) didn't play him, so based on the two games, I think in Mokwana we found a diamond for Bafana Bafana."

The 24-year-old Mokwana has had a sensational season with Sekhukhune United and also scored Bafana’s only goal of the match in 1-1 draw against Andorra last Thursday.

Bafana’s next test is a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier clash against Nigeria to be played in June.
