Manchester United are now said to be targeting a top African star amid reported plans for a major squad overhaul in the off-season.

It has been somewhat of an uninspiring season for the Red Devils, with the club having scored fewer goals (37) than they have conceded (39) in the Premier League so far this term.

Although their star 2023/24 signing, Rasmus Hojlund, found a bright patch of form in front of goal in recent months, the team's scoring problems have been laid bare to witness, especially given that United's top scorer last season, Marcus Rashford, has struggled to replicate his form in this campaign.

The Red Devils have continued to be linked with strikers as a result, with names such as Timo Werner (who went on to join Tottenham Hotspur on loan), Serhou Guirassy and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting having been rumoured to be on their radar in the recent January transfer window.

Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe's recent acquisition of a 27.7% stake in the club, reports suggest that some wholesale changes could take place at Old Trafford in the off-season, with a recruitment overhaul being mooted.

According to The Independent UK, a proven goalscorer is on the list of priorities, with United now targeting African superstar Victor Osimhen.

The Nigerian remains one of the most highly sought-after players in the world, with giants like Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Arsenal said to be also considering a swoop.

It is claimed the 25-year-old has a release clause of €110 million (R2.2 billion) in his contract at Napoli, and that the Ratcliffe regime is tempted to make him their statement signing in the coming months.

Osimhen played an integral role in Nigeria's recent run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and has registered a productive 11 goals and three assists in 16 Serie A games for Napoli so far this term.

In January, the striker confirmed that he has already decided his fate for next season, telling CBS Sports: "I have already made my decision on the next step to do at the end of the season. I already made up my mind. I already have my plan, I know what I want to do, the next step I want to take.

"I think 60% of the people mention the rumours about me linked with the Premier League. The Premier League is one of the biggest leagues in the world. I want to finish the season with Napoli strong then come up with the decision I've already made."
